Sun protection film for windows with noticeable heat protection lowers the room temperature by up to 12°C.
Our high-quality sun protection films for indoor and outdoor installation provide you with noticeable protection from the sun's heat & glare at the window. The heat protection films effectively lower the room temperature thanks to 50 - 89 % energy rejection (depending on the film type). Rooms heat up less, air conditioning systems are relieved and the feeling of well-being within your own four walls increases in summer.
Should sun protection film be installed inside or outside?
Compared to interior films, exterior films have the advantage that a large part of the sun's rays is directly reflected. A smaller part is absorbed and only the smallest part passes through the pane. In addition, they can be used as heat protection on almost all insulating glazing.
It is advisable to apply the film only to the outside of modern insulating glazing installed after 1995 and the heat protection film for roof windows described below. The reason for this is that the tension in the glass is too high, which could occur if the film is installed on the inside.
We therefore generally recommend that you only apply the self-adhesive heat protection film to the outside of sloped glazing, such as conservatories or skylights! This is because the solar radiation is extreme due to the installation position being inclined to the sun. By installing the film on the outside, the window glass remains significantly cooler and the thermal loads on the windows are lower. This installation is even possible with solar control glazing. In addition, the protection value is approximately 4% higher with external installation.
The situation is different with vertically installed window panes: Here, depending on the type of glass installed, interior installation is possible. The sun protection for windows on the inside is often used if your windows cannot be opened or there is no possibility to install it from the outside. The heat protection on insulating glazing is more durable when installed indoors, due to the fact that it is not affected by weather conditions such as wind or rain.
Sun protection films for roof windows
Especially in attic flats, temperatures often rise immeasurably in the summer. The sunlight coming in through the skylights heats up the rooms considerably. Once the room temperature is at the same level as the outside temperature, ventilation rarely brings any significant improvement. This is exactly where our sun protection films for roof windows promise effective relief by reflecting the sun's rays back onto the outside of the window glass. With the help of the heat protection film, the heat does not even penetrate through your double glazing, which leads to a significantly cooler room temperature (depending on the design). For bedrooms under the roof, for example, we recommend the silver dark mirrored sun protection film with the strongest protective value.
Further advantages of sun protection films in a nutshell:
- No maintenance required regardless of the weather
- Depending on the type of film, the film also has glare protection, which makes working at computer workstations much more pleasant
- Reduction of the temperature in the room and cost reduction for air-conditioning, air-conditioning units are relieved of load
- Complies with workplace regulations §9 paragraph 2 and §6 paragraph 1
- Scratch-resistant surface, easy cleaning with commercially available glass cleaners
- More pleasant room temperatures in summer thanks to effective heat protection. This can be easily determined with a product test: Using an infrared thermometer, the temperature difference can be determined directly, even with our samples.
- Depending on the type of film, solar control film protects against heat reduction in winter periods (particularly effective with single glazing)
- Clear view without distortion to the outside (only self-adhesive heat protection films)
- Daytime privacy thanks to the mirror effect, depending on the film type
- Depending on the film type, also suitable as UV protection film, safety film / shatter protection film or anti-glare film
Sun protection film for shop windows
The special characteristics of a shop window require special sun protection. There are two alternatives for this application:
- You use a completely transparent UV protection film, which protects your displays from fading. This does not provide any heat protection and therefore does not end-load your air-conditioning unit, but it effectively slows down the fading of the objects behind the window by a factor of 3-4.
- If you want additional heat protection for your shop window, then choose our clear transparent sun protection film or the slightly silver mirrored heat protection film, which allows passers-by to continue looking through the shop window. For very large shop windows, we can also supply the film as a whole roll.
Most shop windows consist of single glazing, so there is nothing to prevent the interior installation of a film with light heat protection.
Sun protection films for Plexiglas panes
Plastic glazing is a special application. For these panes there is a special sun protection film for plastic windows that can follow the expansion of the plastic. This occurs as soon as the plastic is heated up by the sun's heat. Conventional heat protection films should therefore not be used for plastic windows. These would crack when the Plexiglas heats up. The special window films for plastic windows are only available as exterior films. As with sun protection films for window panes, UV radiation is effectively reduced.
Privacy protection thanks to mirror effect
With all highly mirrored sun protection films, the reflection caused by daylight during the day is sufficient to create a visual screen and prevent passers-by from looking through the window pane from the outside. We refer to this type of film as mirror film and have compiled a list of all possible sun protection films with mirror effect in this category.
The advantage of this type of film is that it prevents people from looking in, just like a privacy film. Due to the high reflection of the sun's rays, there is also a certain light protection. However, unlike a frosted glass film, for example, the privacy protection is only on one side. The disadvantage is that the privacy screen only works during the day. In the evening, when it gets dark, there is no reflection.
Cut to size
We cut all window films precisely to your desired size. The cutting is done with millimetre precision thanks to the latest computer technology, starting from a large roll of film. On each article page, the dimensions can be entered in centimetres [ cm ] with decimal places. In addition, there is a large selection of geometries to choose from. This means that the window film fits directly onto the glass and does not have to be laboriously cut to size on site. The delivery of individually tailored films with heat protection takes place within a few working days thanks to our shipping partners.
As an alternative to computer-controlled cutting, we also offer the films as running metres or whole film rolls for large purchase quantities.
Questions and answers
Indoor installation or outdoor installation?
The following applies in principle: For modern windows installed after 1995, only external installation is recommended! Please ask for possible exceptions during an expert consultation with Velken customer service.
Advantages of internal installation
- The film is protected from the weather, which increases durability.
- It is cheaper than the variant for outdoor installation
Advantages of outdoor installation
- External mounting offers the advantage of higher efficiency (approx. 4%) compared to internal mounting.
- Sun protection films can also be installed on the outside of modern windows.
- Films are resistant to the weather due to an additional protective layer.
What are the benefits of a sun protection film?
Sun protection film reduces the indoor temperature and leads to a better feeling of well-being. Air conditioning costs can be saved. Depending on the type of film, the efficiency of the sun protection as well as the light transmission varies.
How good are sun protection films?
Sun protection films are as good as the strength of their reflection. The more pronounced the reflection, the higher its efficiency and thus also the total energy rejection. So the coolest is with a strongly or darkly mirrored sun protection film.
What does sun protection film cost?
Sun protection film costs between 26.90 €/m² to 38.90 €/m². The price difference depends on the selected film type.
We calculate the price exactly according to the entered film size in width x height. In this way, no superfluous material is purchased and the price is lower!
How do I get the sun protection film off again?
To remove a sun protection film, grasp it at one corner and then slowly pull it off at a wrong angle. In the case of adhesive films, the film can be warmed up beforehand with a hair dryer to dissolve the adhesive. Any adhesive residue after removing the sun protection film can be easily removed with our adhesive residue remover.
How do I care for my sun protection film?
Recommended:
- The sun protection film must not be cleaned during the first three weeks after application.
- Commercially available glass cleaning agents can be used.
- Clean the windows with soft cloths or a chamois leather.
- Make sure that rubber wipers and all other cleaning utensils are clean.
- Please clean film edges carefully.
- Therefore, clean an externally installed film at short intervals so that the hard dirt particles cannot settle too firmly on the film surface.
- In the case of externally laid films, coarse dust and dirt should be removed from the film with a very wet, soft chamois leather and sufficient clean water.
Cleaning:
- Spray the window surface with the water - cleaner mixture.
- Wipe off water with a rubber wiper from top to bottom.
- Soak heavily soiled areas again and clean with soft chamois leather or sponge and plenty of water.
- Spray the window again with a water-cleaner mixture and wipe off with a squeegee from top to bottom.
Not recommended:
- Do not use abrasive cleaning agents
- Never clean the panes dry.
- Do not use glass scrapers, razor blades or Scotch.
- Do not clean with high-pressure cleaners or steam cleaners.
- In general, the application of advertising stickers to the film coating is not recommended.
- Always remember: The surface coating of the film is scratch-resistant, but not indestructible.
How does a sun protection film work?
The sun's rays bring solar energy in the form of heat to the window glass. The room behind it heats up. Thanks to the special coating of a solar control film, the solar energy is reflected back. Your room remains pleasantly cool even in record summer temperatures.
How long do sun protection films last?
Depending on the type of film, the installation side and the installation position, sun protection films last for many years. Durabilities of between 10 and 15 years are possible. Please contact us for an exact durability prediction. We will be happy to assess your situation.
How do I apply sun protection film?
Self-adhesive films have a transparent adhesive applied to the back, just like a sticker. On top of this is a protective film that must first be peeled off. Now the adhesive side and the pane are sprayed with water. Then the sun protection film is placed on the glass and the water is wiped out from under the film.
